Stamford Hospital Brings EHRs to Practices

Stamford (Conn.) Hospital has purchased 100 licenses for Web-based practice management and electronic health records software from eClinicalWorks, Westborough, Mass.

The hospital expects that roughly 20% of the licenses will be used by its employed physicians while 80% will be used by independent, affiliated physicians, a hospital spokesman said. The hospital will subsidize an undisclosed portion of the cost for independent doctors by taking advantage of the Stark Act exemption and safe harbors to the federal anti-kickback statutes.

The vendor will remotely host both applications for the physicians, who will access the software via the Internet. Some physicians will access information via their smart phones using the vendor’s eClinicalMobile application.

The practices will also use eClinicalWork’s patient portal technology. The portal will offer patients a secure method for communicating with clinicians, accessing billing statements and receiving education. And physicians will use the vendor’s Enterprise Business Optimizer software to access customized reports on their patients.

In addition, Stamford Hospital will use the vendor’s Electronic Health eXchange application to ease the exchange of data among practice sites.

More information is available at eclinicalworks.com.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
