Glucose Chip Plans to be Unveiled

Delray Beach, Fla.-based VeriChip Corp. will unveil plans next week for a forthcoming implantable radio frequency identification chip that can measure glucose levels in the human body.

The vendor is inviting members of the medical, diabetic and investment communities to an event Dec. 4 at the Grand Hyatt in New York to hear about the new chip. Before the event, it will issue a white paper describing the features, benefits and technologies of the device.

Earlier this year, VeriChip announced it would work with its sister company, Digital Angel, St. Paul, Minn., and Receptors LLC, Chaska, Minn., to develop a microchip that could eliminate the need for diabetics to withdraw blood for testing several times a day.

Digital Angel, which makes implantable chips for animals, last year received a patent for human use of a glucose sensing chip. Receptors LLC was expected to develop a sensor that emits a passive RFID signal to power the chip, scan it and display glucose levels.

To attend the event, contact Allison Tomek at (561) 805-8008. For more information, go to verichipcorp.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
