Waukesha (Wis.) Memorial Hospital has installed an RFID system from Brookfield, Wis.-based RF Technologies that’s designed to protect infants and children from abduction.

The 301-bed hospital is using the Safe Place application in its maternity and pediatric units, placing a small transmitter around the child’s ankle or wrist to enable staff to monitor their location. The transmitter sends a signal to receivers throughout the hospital. If someone tampers with the transmitter, or the child moves too close to a doorway, an alarm sounds and hospital doors automatically lock.

The hospital is a unit of ProHealth Care, a Wisconsin integrated delivery system with two hospitals and 21 clinics.
