ECRI Institute, a Plymouth Meeting, Pa.-based research firm, has published an evaluation of two software systems that use radio frequency identification technology to track surgical sponges.
The report, Radio-Frequency Surgical Sponge Detection, compares the SmartSponge System of ClearCount Medical Solutions, Pittsburgh; and the RF Surgical Detection System of RF Surgical Systems Inc., Bellevue, Wash.
In the report, ECRI researchers assess the products capabilities and effect on workflow, cost and space issues. They also address the clinical and business impact of such systems, and make selection and purchasing recommendations.
The two evaluated systems are the only such systems so far to receive market approval from the Food and Drug Administration. The report, in the July issue of ECRIs Health Devices online journal, is available for $285. To order, send an e-mail to clientservices@ecri.org.
