Delray Beach, Fla.-based VeriChip Corp. next week will begin its first direct-to-consumer marketing campaign for its radio frequency identification technology-based patient identification system. Initial marketing will focus on the South Florida area. The vendor also has changed the name of the application and created an informational Web site for the new campaign.
The vendor's direct-to-consumer program enables patients to be implanted with its microchip for free and pay a $9.95 monthly fee for its patient registry service.
The Health Link system, which was previously called VeriMed, enables patients to be implanted with a microchip that's linked to their medical information. The chip, which contains a 16-digit identification number assigned by the vendor, is implanted underneath the patient's skin, between the elbow and shoulder.
Physicians can access the number by scanning a patient with the vendor's reader. To access the medical record, physicians must enter the number into VeriChip's Web-based Patient Registry Database.
VeriChip also has partnered with HearUSA Inc., a West Palm Beach, Fla.-based hearing care delivery system, to enable patients to enroll in its Health Link system.
