WakeMed to Use RFID to Track Assets

WakeMed Health and Hospitals in Raleigh, N.C., will implement a patient and asset tracking system in its two hospitals. The delivery system also will be a development partner, working with the vendor, RadarFind Corp., Morrisville, N.C., to create new functionalities.

The RadarFind Real Time Location System relies on tags attached to supplies, equipment or clothing that send location data to readers and ultimately to tracking software via radio frequency identification signals. The system’s readers plug into electrical outlets, rather than an RFID or WiFi network. They communicate the location data to a collector box, located in a data storage closet.

WakeMed will use the system to track medical devices and equipment. The system also can track the operational status of equipment, such as whether it has been disinfected, which will support WakeMed’s development of best practices for infection control.
