Intuit Inc. has introduced its Quicken Health Expense Tracker application and CIGNA is the first insurer to offer it free on its Web site.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Intuit announced three years ago it would develop the application in partnership with the Ingenix subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, Minneapolis. Quicken Health Expense Tracker is designed to enable consumers to organize, file and reconcile their health care financial information in one place. It includes tools to help consumers better understand financial documents, such as an explanation of benefits, to more easily see how much they owe and why.

Bloomfield, Conn.-based CIGNA will offer the software to members enrolled in its Open Access, PPO, Point of Service and HMO health plans. A client, amusement park operator Six Flags Inc., New York, was one of the beta sites.

Two other insurers have committed to offering Quicken Health Expense Tracker. Intuit expects soon to start pilot programs with UnitedHealthcare, with full rollout expected by year-end. The vendor also expects Cleveland-based Medical Mutual of Ohio to start testing and rolling out the product to members this summer.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
