Google Jumps Into Health Records

Cleveland Clinic is working with Mountain View, Calif.-based Google Inc. to make personal health records more portable.

Under the collaboration, 1,500 to 10,000 Cleveland Clinic patients will test transmitting data from their Cleveland Clinic-sponsored PHR to a secure personal Google account. The eventual goal is to enable patients to also transmit data from other providers—even those outside the Cleveland Clinic Health System--into their Google account, giving them one-place access to all of their health information.

The Google account also will make it easier for patients to share all pertinent data with any provider of care, according to the organizations.

Eric Schmidt, chair and CEO of Google, will give a keynote address on Feb. 28 during the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, Fla.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
