Medicare Offers PHRs in Arizona, Utah

Medicare beneficiaries in Arizona and Utah can select one of four personal health records software products to help manage their health under a pilot program that launched on Jan. 13.

Beneficiaries can have their PHRs populated with up to two years of relevant Medicare claims data. They also can manually enter other information into a PHR. Beneficiaries have a choice of free or subscription-based PHRs from HealthTrio, Centennial, Colo.; NoMoreClipboard.com, Fort Wayne, Ind.; Passport MD, Delray Beach, Fla., and soon Google Health from Mountain View, Calif.-based Google Inc.

Depending on the PHR selected, beneficiaries can authorize electronic links to other personal information, such as pharmacy data. That service may entail an extra fee. The PHRs also may offer tools for tracking diet and exercise, accessing medical reference content, and detecting potential medication interactions. Beneficiaries can authorize access to their PHR to family members, physicians and others.

Medicare previously launched a PHR program in South Carolina. More information on the Arizona and Utah programs is available at medicare.gov/phr/PHRChoice.asp.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
