John Glaser, vice president and CIO at Partners HealthCare System Inc. in Boston, is in discussions on contract terms to become a temporary advisor to the new National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Glaser says he would serve as a full-time advisor for six months starting in May, returning to his role at Partners at the conclusion of the term.

President Obama recently selected David Blumenthal M.D., to serve as national coordinator within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Blumenthal was director of the Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, part of Partners.

The economic stimulus bill, now the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, makes the position of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology permanent and expands the coordinator's duties. The coordinator will oversee plans for more than $19 billion in funding for I.T., including Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments to physicians and hospitals for use of electronic health records.
