AHIC Successor Inc., the new organization that will succeed the American Health Information Community advisory body, has changed its name to the National eHealth Collaborative.

Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt in 2005 created the American Health Information Community to advise federal officials on issues related to developing a national health information network.

Over time, AHIC expanded to oversee a number of initiatives to develop and test "use cases" for important functions a national network would be required to support. In 2007, Leavitt pushed for creation of a new public-private corporation to continue AHIC's work beyond the Bush administration.

John Tooker, M.D., head of the American College of Physicians, will serve as chair of the National eHealth Collaborative's board of directors during 2009. Kevin Hutchinson, president and CEO of Prematics Inc., will serve as vice chair.

The Alexandria, Va.-based collaborative wants to rapidly increase its membership and is calling on stakeholders to participate in committees and workgroups. More information is available at nationalehealth.org.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
