England’s I.T. Push Gets New Leaders

The Department of Health in England has its first CIO and a new leader for the National Health Services’ Connecting for Health program to implement clinical information systems across the nation.

Martin Bellamy is the new director of Connecting for Health, succeeding long-time and controversial leader Richard Granger, who left in January. Critics contended Granger’s heavy-handed style resulted in inadequate industry input as the program was designed and executed, contributing to delays. Bellamy will be responsible for leading the initiative and enhancing partnerships. He has served in the Department for Work and Pensions since 2003, most recently as CIO. He previously was a partner at KPMG Consulting in London.

Christine Connelly has been named to the new position of CIO at the Department of Health. She will be responsible for the National Health Services’ overall information technology strategy, which includes Connecting for Health.

Connelly previously was CIO of Cadbury Schweppes, and spent 20 years in various positions including I.T. leader at BP PLC, a major oil and gas company.
