The Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a contract to Harris Corp. to develop and integrate a national health information exchange gateway as part of the National Health Information Network initiative. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
The gateway will initially be designed to enable government health care providers within the Department of Defense, Veterans Administration, Social Security Administration and Indian Health Service to exchange patient medical records. The second phase of deployment will move the technology into the public domain.
Under the contract, Melbourne, Fla.-based Harris will offer customized, open-source software that can be easily downloaded by providers to enable connection to the NHIN, as well as a software development kit to enable them to customize their connection. The vendor will reuse and integrate technology based on the Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid used by the National Cancer Institute and the Bi-directional Health Information Exchange that the DoD and VA already use to exchange medical information.
Agilex Technologies Inc., Chantilly, Va., and ScenPro Inc., Richardson, Texas, are subcontractors for the initiative.
Harris sells communications and information technology to various industries. For more information, go to harris.com.
