IHS Ready to Spend $500 Million

The Indian Health Service is set to release $500 million in economic stimulus funds, including $85 million for information technology enhancements in facilities throughout the nation that serve American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
The I.T. funds will support applications that improve quality, reduce errors and modernize administrative functions; new hardware and network infrastructure improvements; integration software; and telehealth services.

Other stimulus funding for Indiana Health Service will build new hospitals in Eagle Butte, S.D., and Nome, Alaska; complete 169 potable water, wastewater disposal or solid waste systems in 24 states; purchase more than 200 pieces of medical equipment including 35 ambulances and 10 CT scanners; and complete 302 maintenance and improvement projects at health facilities.
