The American Academy of Professional Coders will offer on-site training on implementing the new ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes. The three-day, customizable curriculum is available to health plans and provider organizations of all sizes.

The course prepared by the Salt Lake City, Utah-based association leads organizations through the implementation process step-by-step. It addresses such topics as organizing the effort, developing cross-functional teams, budgeting, outcomes measurement, crosswalking and mapping, and compliance. It also includes hands-on exercises using the new codes.

Hospitals and physician practices must move to the ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and phase out ICD-9 codes for documentation and billing for all payers by Oct. 1, 2013. Hospitals also must implement ICD-10-PCS procedure codes by that date, while clinics will continue to use CPT codes for procedures.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
