A new fact sheet from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services details changes between the existing ICD-9 code sets and ICD-10, which must be implemented by Oct. 1, 2013.
The document explains structural differences between the code sets, lists a dozen recommendations for implementation planning, confirms continued use of CPT codes for ambulatory and outpatient Medicare fee-for-service claims, and gives several examples of the vastly expanded ICD-10 code sets.
For instance, ICD-9-CM has one code for "mechanical complication of other vascular device, implant and graph," while ICD-10-CM has 156 codes. ICD-9-CM has one code for angioplasty; ICD-10-PCS has 854 codes that specify the body part, approach and device. As an example, the fact sheet lists and explains five codes covering dilation of the right femoral artery.
The CMS fact sheet on ICD-10 is available at cms.hhs.gov/MLNProducts/downloads/ICD-10factsheet2009.pdf.
