PHR Supports Medical Tourism

A hospital in Thailand is using Microsoft’s HealthVault personal health record platform to support its efforts to promote medical tourism. Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok treated more than 45,000 U.S. patients in 2008.

Using HealthVault, international patients can place test results, medications, discharge summaries and other information generated at Bumrungrad into their personal health record for access by others, such as U.S. physicians, to whom they grant permission.

The hospital is using the Amalga data aggregation system from Microsoft to create a continuity of care record that can supply information to the PHR.

More information is available at microsoft.com and bumrungrad.com.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
