In one of several pre-conference educational sessions, the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Symposium will take place both Saturday and Sunday, March 2 and 3, prior to the main conference. The nursing symposium runs Saturday from 1-5 p.m. with a reception to follow, and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Speakers on Day 1 include Nancy Ridenour, PhD., R.N., dean and professor, University of New Mexico College of Nursing. She was a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow with the Committee on Ways and Means in the House of Representatives. She has authored numerous journal articles and has focused her career on health policy.

Ridenour will speak on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. Her session will discuss how nurses can take on leadership roles to influence health policy, thereby bringing evidence for decision making to the point of care and empowering patients and health care consumers as partners. This session will further explore current health policy initiatives and advocate for efforts that leverage informatics and technology to improve patient safety and health outcomes.

Later that day, Patricia Horoho, one of the first nurses in the 236-year history of Army medicine and the U.S. Department of Defense to serve as the U.S. Surgeon General, will describe how she embraces informatics using collaborative partnerships through quality initiatives to improve the health of the nation.

Other speakers include Linda Fischetti, R.N., vice president, care delivery, accountable care solutions, at Aetna. On Sunday morning, Fischetti will define nursing informatics' role in advancing quality outcomes through new initiatives and the payer perspective. She will discuss data needed to support the ACO model.
