North Carolina HIE Reaches Milestone

The last of 16 hospitals participating in the Western North Carolina Health Information Exchange has gone live with a physician Web portal, completing the first phase of the initiative.

Physicians use the portal to access such hospital data as new patient histories, recent medications, lab results, and emergency and primary physician contacts. MEDSEEK Inc., Birmingham, Ala., is the portal vendor.

The 16 participating hospitals use five different core information systems. Physicians use single-sign-on software to access multiple systems. The physician portal also supports online patient-physician consultations.

A second phase of the HIE, also called WNC Data Link, will work to connect physician office electronic health records systems to the network.
