NY Hospitals Exchange Data

Nine New York City hospitals have begun exchanging certain data for emergency patients via the New York Clinical Information Exchange.

The emergency departments use a Web portal to access information on patients. This can include demographic information, lab and pathology test results, discharge summaries, medication histories and more.

In addition to the hospital emergency departments, the Visiting Nurse Service of New York and the Institute for Family Health, a community health center, are exchanging certain data via the health information exchange. The HIE also is providing data to a project sponsored by the New York State Department of Health Centers for Disease Control that’s studying how HIEs can support public health goals, including biosurveillance.

The HIE uses technology from MedPlus, a Cincinnati, Ohio-based unit of Quest Diagnostics.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
