Hospitals using the MedMined hospital-acquired infection tracking application from Cardinal Health soon will be able to compare their HAI rate with other similar facilities.
The Dublin, Ohio-based vendor developed a benchmarking tool earlier this year with input from the Alabama Hospital Quality Initiative, a partnership between the vendor, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and the Alabama Hospital Association.
The application, which tracks HAIs via a standard nosocomial infection marker, now graphs the incidence of HAIs in all units of a hospital and indicates whether each unit is improving. It also enables hospitals to compare their HAI incidents with other hospitals in the same peer category.
The software makes such comparisons based on the size and type of the unit as well as the severity of illness of patients. The hospital can compare HAIs in each of its units separately or combine them to compare its entire facility to peer organizations.
The benchmarking tool was launched in February for 46 hospitals in Alabama. It will be rolled out to all hospitals using the software in a phased approach beginning in May.
