All 65 hospitals in South Carolina are collaborating in an effort to eliminate preventable health care-associated infections and reduce costs. The effort includes formation of an information-sharing portal to research causes of infections and identify and promote processes for prevention.

Joining in the formation of the South Carolina Healthcare Quality Trust are the South Carolina Hospital Association; Premier Inc., a national purchasing alliance; and Health Sciences South Carolina, a collaborative of universities and health systems.

Participants will research the causes of infections and test preventive measures. The Trust’s portal will enable participants to share best practices and success stories as well as access similar information from other hospitals nationwide. The portal also will enable hospitals to track their improvement against state and national benchmarks.

Participants also will have access to Premier’s automated infection surveillance application. More information is available at premierinc.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
