Disenchanted with England's Connecting for Health program to implement electronic health records nationwide, the Conservative Party is talking of a radical change.
Conservatives, known as Tories, would like to pull the plug on the program. Instead, they want to enable consumers to house their medical records on private company Web sites, such as Google Health and Microsoft HealthVault, according to The Times of London newspaper.
The paper, in two articles on July 6, also noted close ties that Google has to the Tories, and "a welter of ethical and practical difficulties that could yet scupper the idea and must be considered."
Connecting for Health is four years behind schedule and now expected to be completed in 2012 at a cost of 12.4 billion British pounds, about $20.27 billion U.S. dollars.
