Hospital Launches EHR Subsidies

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, Newport Beach, Calif., is kicking off a program to subsidize a portion of the cost of electronic health records for area physicians by working with Physician’s Trust, a San Clemente, Calif.-based consulting firm.

Exceptions to the so-called Stark law and I.T. safe harbors to federal anti-kickback statutes enable hospitals to subsidize certain EHR costs for physicians.

The 498-bed hospital will subsidize 60% of physicians’ cost for licensing fees and various monthly fees for software from eClinicalWorks, Westborough, Mass., says Steve Rhodes, president and CEO of Physician’s Trust. Doctors will access the software remotely using the application service provider computing model.

Physician’s Trust, a reseller of the eClinicalWorks software, will manage the ASP services and provide related consulting, Rhodes explains. The hospital will make the software subsidies available to its 1,100 affiliated independent physicians, he adds.

In addition to records software, doctors can use the ASP to access practice management software from eClinicalWorks.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
