Cardinal May Split Technology Units

Cardinal Health Inc. is considering splitting its Clinical Technologies and Services, and Medical Products and Technologies divisions from the core pharmaceutical and medical supply chain services business that comprises 95% of the company’s revenue.

The Dublin, Ohio-based vendor will decide within 60 to 90 days whether to place the divisions in a separate, publicly traded company.

The Clinical Technologies division accounted for only 3% of revenue in fiscal 2007, but 18% of operating profit. The Medical Products division accounted for 2% of revenue and 9% of operating profit. Together, the divisions saw profit increase 36% to $800 million as revenue rose 24% to $5.6 billion in fiscal 2007.

The Clinical Technologies division includes the Pyxis automated medication dispensing, Alaris I.V. medication management, MedMined infection control and CareFusion patient identification information systems.

The Medical Products division includes medical and surgical products developed and manufactured by Cardinal. It is separate from the company’s medical supply chain services business.
