Only 7% of U.S. hospitals meet The Leapfrog Groups standard for fully implementing computerized physician order entry, according to the groups latest annual survey.
The Washington-based employer consortiums 2008 voluntary hospital survey includes 1,276 hospitals. Based on preliminary survey data, Leapfrog had estimated late last year that CPOE use stood at 8%. Leapfrog also announced last year that a study of 100 hospitals with CPOE found that many faced serious challenges when implementing the systems. The 2008 Leapfrog Hospital Survey also found:
*Efficiency standards,
defined as highest quality and lowest resource use, are met by only 24% of
hospitals for heart bypass surgery, 21% for angioplasty, 14% for heart attack
care and 14% for pneumonia care.
*Some 65% of participating hospitals do not
have all the recommended policies in place to prevent common hospital-acquired
infections.
*Some 75% do not fully meet standards for 13 evidence-based
safety practices.
Individual hospitals results can be viewed and compared at leapfroggroup.org.
