Nursing Home Online Reports Expanded

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services now will include on its Nursing Home Compare Web site whether facilities have been on its Special Focus Facility list.

The agency last fall began the SFF initiative by publishing a list of Medicare and Medicaid participating nursing homes that have a history of serious quality of care problems and had failed to show improvement. Earlier this year it expanded the list and included the category they fell in, such as new additions to the list, improved, improving, recently removed, or no longer approved by Medicare and Medicaid.

As of April 2008, there are 134 SFFs, out of about 16,000 active nursing homes. Once a facility is selected as an SFF, its state survey agency conducts twice the number of standard surveys and applies progressive enforcement to help it improve or remove it from being Medicare and Medicaid approved.

The Nursing Home Compare site, which can be accessed at medicare.gov, is designed to help families find nursing homes in their area. Information about the homes includes performance scores on quality measures, staffing  and a three-year history of the home's health, safety and fire inspection reports. The site will be updated with new information quarterly.
