Ascendent Telecommunications Inc., Los Angeles, has released a technology that can be integrated with an organization's existing wireless network to enable PDAs and notebooks to function as phones. AscendentMX uses the Voice Over Internet Protocol and is designed to help reduce the cost and maintenance of additional wireless network infrastructure by enabling wireless voice communication to travel over an existing wireless data network. The technology enables users to check voice mail, initiate phone calls and view faxes from their PDAs or notebooks. When users step outside an organization's wireless network, the technology continues phone communication on a cellular network. It also provides for phone communications in hot spots, public wireless access points.
