Aetna Inc. has expanded availability of its personal health records to include individuals who have enrolled in its Medicare managed care plans.
Medicare plan enrollees who signed up for coverage through their former employers cannot access a PHR unless the employer has opted to participate in the program.
The national insurer, based in Hartford, Conn., is gradually making its PHR available to various subsets of its customers. So far, the PHR has been offered to 6 million of Aetna's 37.2 million members.
The PHR is populated with claims data as well as information from other sources. These include labs, pharmacies and physicians offices. Individuals also can add information, such as family histories and allergies. With permission from the member, the PHR can be shared online with physicians.
A new Health Tracker feature enables members to more effectively monitor their health data, including blood glucose levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
The records use CareEngine technology developed by Aetnas subsidiary, ActiveHealth Management Inc., New York.
