Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Fujitsu Computer Products of America Inc. and Tampa, Fla.-based HT Systems, an integration vendor, have developed PatientSecure, a biometrics-based patient identification product.

The product combines Fujitsu's PalmSecure sensor that captures the vein pattern in a patient's palm with integration from HT Systems of a provider organization's clinical and registration information systems.

The patient's palm is scanned during registration. When the patient moves between departments in a hospital, or to outpatient sites within a delivery system, the patient can place a palm on a reader to verify identity and pull up the patient's medical records.

Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System, a 19-hospital delivery system, piloted PatientSecure, has implemented it in the hospitals and is deploying the technology at its clinics. More information is available at patientsecure.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
