The European nation of Bulgaria in September will start a pilot test of smart health care identification cards that store data on a computer chip.
The cards will include a patients demographic and insurance information and prescriptions covered by the Bulgarian health insurance fund.
In September, 1,000 chronically ill residents of two towns outside the capital of Sofia will receive the cards at their regular monthly doctor appointment. The physician practices and pharmacies in the region are connected to the National Health Insurance Fund via a secure private network using technology from Cisco Systems Inc., San Jose, Calif.
The Bulgaria Ministry of Health expects to expand health care smart cards nationwide. Germany-based InterComponentWare Inc., with a U.S. office in San Mateo, Calif., is the prime contractor. More information is available at icw-global.com.
