The University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor has completed enterprisewide implementation of single-sign-on software.

The project covered 19,000 users of 12,000 desktop and 3,000 laptop computers across three hospitals, 30 health centers and 120 outpatient clinics. The Vergence software from Andover, Mass.-based Sentillion Inc. enables a user to access patient data from multiple information systems after logging onto U-M Health System’s core clinical and hospital information systems.

A primary goal of using single-sign-on technology was to ease and encourage adoption of computerized physician order entry software, which is a module of the core clinical information system. For more information, see sentillion.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
