Attachments Vendor Finds a Market

For several years, National Electronic Attachment Inc. has offered software enabling dentists to submit electronic attachments to insurers, who can then download the attachments via a secure Web portal before adjudicating the accompanying claims. About 160 dental payers use the service.

Now, several health insurers--mostly Blues plans--have signed up for the Atlanta-based vendor's recent move into supporting electronic attachments that provide additional documentation of medical claims.

The early adopters of the medical attachments software include the Unicare subsidiary of WellPoint Inc.; Blue Cross of California; and Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Alabama, Georgia, Missouri and Wisconsin.

Further, California's MediCal program also is on board through its fiscal agent Electronic Data Systems Corp., which will offer the software to 17 other Medicaid programs. More information is available at nea-fast.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
