A group of health care I.T. trade groups will host a conference June 5-10 in Washington designed to promote a common agenda between the industry and government leaders.

The National Health I.T. Week will include a day of presentations by members of Congress and health care I.T. industry leaders as well as a day of policy development and education discussions. It also will feature presentations on health I.T. implementations. Organizers expect the event to attract more than 2,500 attendees from health care and consumer advocacy organizations.

"This is a significant opportunity to send a powerful message on the importance of accelerating the broader adoption of health information technologies to improve the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of health care in communities throughout our nation," says Janet Marchibroda, CEO of the eHealth Initiative, one of the groups organizing the event.

Other sponsoring groups include:

  • The American Health Information Management Association;
  • The Association for Electronic Health Care Transactions;
  • The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality;
  • The American Medical Informatics Association;
  • The American Telemedicine Association;
  • The California Regional Health Information Organization;
  • The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and
  • The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
