Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La., has implemented a secure Web portal to manage electronic and fax-based messaging with external partners. Contract terms with software vendor ProviderLink Inc., Cary, N.C., were not disclosed.

The portal is designed to enable hospitals to communicate with physician practices, skilled nursing facilities, payers and durable medical equipment vendors, among others.

For instance, the portal will enable Our Lady of the Lake, when discharging a patient to a skilled nursing facility, to generate and transmit a referral to the patient's insurance company and the nursing facility, and to send the discharge summary to the facility.

Other communications available via the portal include insurance eligibility verification and treatment authorization transactions, signature requests, claims attachments, and utilization reviews.

The portal offers an audit trail detailing what information was sent to whom and when, enabling easier analysis of potential communication bottlenecks, according to the vendor. Additional information is available at providerlink.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
