Philadelphia-based Independence Blue Cross has spent more than $1 million to give 500 of its contracted physicians electronic prescribing technology. The Blues plan has begun distributing the technology to physicians for the year-long initiative, which was announced last September.
Its offering physicians the choice of a PDA from Round Rock, Texas-based Dell Inc. or a BlackBerry communications device from Ontario-based Research In Motion Ltd. The devices will be embedded with electronic prescribing software from Dallas-based Zix Corp. or Chicago-based Allscripts LLC.
The initiative is designed to enable physicians to use the hand-helds to write and send prescriptions to pharmacies. The payer also will enable physicians to check formulary, eligibility, drug interaction and other pharmacy information via the PDAs.
