Patients Get Rx Refills via Kiosk

Patients refilling their prescriptions at a Giant Foods store in Reston, Va., can pick them up even when the grocery's pharmacy is not open. That's because the Landover, Md.-based chain has implemented a kiosk at the store for patients to use to pick up prescriptions.

Patients can request to use the ScriptCenter kiosk from San Diego-based Asteres Inc. by filling out a registration form. Then after they order their prescription refills, Giant Food pharmacists place the refill into a bar-coded bag and load it the kiosk.

Patients can receive their prescription by entering on the kiosk a username and password given to them during registration. The kiosk then validates their prescription from the ones that have been loaded into it. It also prompts patients to swipe a debit or credit card, processes the payment, then delivers the prescription into a bin in the front of the device that opens for the patient.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
