Siemens, NextGen Align

Siemens Medical Solutions will sell the practice management and electronic medical records software of NextGen Healthcare Information Systems Inc. under a strategic alliance. Contract terms of the worldwide agreement between Malvern, Pa.-based Siemens and Horsham, Pa.-based NextGen were not disclosed.

Both vendors are involved in several initiatives--including the Continuity of Care Record--to enhance the interoperability of information systems. The alliance gives Siemens a foothold in the ambulatory care market and provides an opportunity to increase I.T. interoperability between the ambulatory and acute care environments. Being able to offer ambulatory care products will enable Siemens to market an enterprisewide suite of software to delivery systems.

For NextGen, the alliance brings the opportunity to accelerate its expansion into additional domestic markets and international markets, says Patrick Cline, president.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
