I've noticed a change in the past couple years. HIT leaders I meet with face-to-face are a little red-eyed, with a bit of a sweaty sheen. They don't have time to sit down; they mince on their toes like there's too much coffee in the pipes, and they're clenching their mobiles, white-knuckled. Phone conversations that used to stretch 30 minutes often have 15-minute hard stops, and though interviewees are as unfailingly polite as ever, they sound like they're staying on the phone while the flames are wicking through their office doors. They need to run.
