For its part, Aetna has invested heavily in information technology-more than $1 billion in the past five years-to supports its ACO arrangements, Henderson says. During that time, Aetna purchased Medicity, a well-planted HIE vendor, in addition to ActiveHealth, a claims aggregation and analytics firm. Beyond that, the payer has also acquired iTriage, which makes a consumer-facing app promoting healthy behaviors and helping patients track their care. "We want to help providers improve quality but also grow their business," Henderson says. "Providers need to integrate clinical and claims information to enrich their view into the patient."
