Health care CIOs need to do a better job marketing within their organization the value of the information systems department, says Chuck Christian, director of information systems and CIO at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind. "If you're not telling your story, someone else will, and you may not like the image you end up with," he warns.
Christian will co-host an educational session on I.T. marketing during the HIMSS Conference. Marketing helps raise I.T.'s visibility, but there is more than spin involved, Christian says. I.T. should view other departments in an organization as customers, and the marketing campaign should have a goal of improving customer relations. "You can't sit in your office; you have to be out talking to your customers."
During the session, Christian and Steven Bennett, vice president at Snelling Executive Search in Altamonte Springs, Fla., will discuss what CIOs are doing, such as branding strategies for large projects. Christian knows a CIO who set aside funds for marketing, and borrowed someone from the marketing department for help.
He'll also discuss how his weekly CIO blog to the I.T. department brings the marketing focus even deeper in-house and keeps the team together. "They like to know what I'm thinking, where we're going and what other people's priorities are," he explains. "For example, I might write, 'We're shifting gears next week and here's why.'"
Session #15, "Where's the Beef? Marketing I.T. in the Healthcare Environment," will be held Monday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. in Room 304 A-D of the Orange County Convention Center.
