Health information security consultant Tom Walsh adheres to core teachings of the best practices for I.T. governance collected by United Kingdom's Information Technology Infrastructure Library. "It's people, processes and technology, in that order," says the president of Tom Walsh Consulting LLC, Overland Park, Kan.
At a day-long workshop before the HIMSS Conference, in Orlando, Fla., Walsh will cover the insights and skills for designing, implementing and administering information security programs. "We'll talk about technology, but this is not a course for technical engineers."
Walsh has taught this workshop for several years at HIMSS, and its target audience is C-level executives and compliance officers. It is valuable, however, to techies who want to learn more about the policy angle, he notes.
Health care is a business and no business is without risk, so Walsh will show where the greatest risks are and how to appropriately manage them. "The main point is helping people better understand the business and processes of information security."
For instance, virtually every health care organization accepts credit/debit payments and should be in compliance with applicable federal security standards, he contends. "No organization wants to make the newspapers in a bad way."
The Information Security Workshop will be on Sunday, Feb. 24, and carries a $250 fee in addition to HIMSS registration costs.
