The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a technological society and standards development organization, has published a roadmap for creating standards to aid in transitioning electronic applications based on nanotechnology from the laboratory to commercial use.

Uses for nanotechnology are being developed in multiple industries, including health care. Nanotechnology is the building of devices, such as electronic circuits or drug delivery systems, from single atoms or molecules.

In health care, research is accelerating on how to use nanotechnology to support genetic engineering and new surgical procedures.

The roadmap from Piscataway, N.J.- based IEEE covers standards for nanomaterials and devices that are expected to yield the highest benefits in the short-term. It also discusses standards likely to be needed for tighter integration as applications and devices become more complex.

In particular, the roadmap recommends initiation of five standards in 2007 and the start of 12 other standards in 2008.

The IEEE roadmap for nanotechnology standards and conference information are available at its Web site: http://standards.ieee.org.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
