The awards are named in memory of Nicholas Davies, M.D., a champion of information technology and member of the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Improving the Patient Record.
Davies died in 1991.
The 2011 organizational award winner is Kaiser Permanente, which has implemented a systemwide electronic health record.
The ambulatory Davies Awards go to Fallon Clinic in Worcester, Mass., for measurable improvements in quality, safety, efficiency and satisfaction following EHR implementation; and James Holsinger, M.D., a solo family practitioner in Keokuk, Iowa. The practice started with no patients in 2003 and now has 1,400 active patients with profitability in the first 20 months and use of virtually every available EHR function and interface.
Hudson River HealthCare in Peekskill, N.Y., is the winner of the community health organization Davies Award. The provider organization uses I.T. to manage 64,000 patients over 16 primary care sites.
The public health winners are the Florida Department of Health's Bureau of Epidemiology for its Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics, Florida, or ESSENCE-FL; and the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene for its Primary Care Information Project.
