The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation has placed on the open source market the source code for tools to develop, maintain and facilitate the use of SNOMED CT clinical terminology. Used for documenting clinical care, SNOMED CT includes more than 315,000 active concepts, 806,000 active descriptions and 945,000 defining relationships.

The source code for the IHTSDO Workbench now is available for free under an Apache 2.0 open source license from the Apache Software Foundation, Forest Hill, Md. Apache 2.0 is a backbone and licensing vehicle to distribute the source code. The foundation provides support to open source software projects. IHTSDO also will make a number of seats on a collaborative, Web-based environment used to host the Workbench available free of charge to open source developers.

IHTSDO last January introduced the Workbench. The tools come from a number of organizations. Available tools enable users to author terminology, map terminology to other code sets, undertake workflow and process automation, search and browse terminology, and classify terminology, among other functions.

Workbench users can work independently or collaborate with other developers. IHTSDO also is making non-clinical meta-data describing the structure of SNOMED CT available under an Apache 2.0 license.

IHTSDO intends to add more modules to the Workbench over time and to encourage partners to build and share complementary tools. The source code is available at http://csfe.aceworkspace.net/sf/projects/ihtsdo_workbench.
