Health Data Management tracked 23 health information management vendor acquisitions during the fourth quarter of 2012, which as year-end neared included a typical flurry of deals closed in December. Here’s a look at the more notable buys:

Health Tech Holdings, parent company of community hospital vendor Healthcare Management Systems, bought perioperative software vendor Acuitec LLC. HMS will integrate the perioperative software into its electronic health record system. Health Tech previously acquired emergency department information systems vendor MEDHOST to expand HMS’ functionality, and revenue cycle-document management vendor Sentry Healthcare Services.

After private equity firm Thoma Bravo acquired hospital ancillary vendor Mediware Information Systems, Mediware made its fourth buy of 2012 and 11th in three years. Mediware historically sold blood, medication and home health management information systems, but has expanded in recent years to serve alternative care settings. In December, it picked up MediServe of Chandler, Ariz. MediServe sells information systems to manage inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and respiratory care facilities.

Thoma Bravo also acquired a “substantial investment” in SRS Software, a vendor of electronic health records for the ambulatory specialist market. Financial terms and the degree of ownership were not disclosed, but SRS now is listed under Thoma Bravo’s portfolio of companies. SRS sells a hybrid EHR that incorporates document imaging and management software, and is certified under Stage 1 of the meaningful use program. CEO Evan Steele continues to lead the company.

Health insurer Humana acquired health information exchange platform vendor Certify Data Systems. The buy is part of Humana’s ongoing strategy of expanding into the provider market, and having HIE capability will aid in providing more coordinated care and moving toward creating an integrated payer-provider delivery system. Other major insurers who previously bought HIE vendors include Aetna (Medicity) and UnitedHealth Group’s OptumInsight unit (Axolotl).

Private equity firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe bought GetWellNetwork, which sells a television-based communication system for hospital patient rooms. The system includes products for pediatric, adult and senior patients offering educational information and entertainment, such as access to email, the Internet, games and movies. It also has dashboard tools for clinicians. The vendor touts deployment on more than 30,000 hospital beds.

Pri-Med LLC, operator of continuing medical education conferences and online courses, acquired ambulatory electronic health records vendor Amazing Charts, which won Best in KLAS for small EHRs in 2011. Pri-Med serves more than 260,000 physicians annually and Amazing Charts serves about 5,600 practices. Pri-Med now will offer educational services through the EHR at the point of care, and market the records system to its client base. The companies are well-acquainted as Amazing Charts has attended Pri-Med conferences for nine years.

Health information content management company Wolters Kluwer Health bought medical terminology software vendor Health Language Inc. Wolters Kluwer picks up medical terminology databases for providers, insurers and software vendors to manage and map 180 terminologies and administrative code sets. It also gets expanded access to insurers through Health Language.

Two vendors serving health insurers made separate acquisitions. Core payer administration system vendor HealthEdge bought Click4Care, which sells customer relationship, disease, care and utilization management applications, along with a member medical record and data analytics. HealthEdge will integrate the products into its HealthRules platform. ExlService Holdings, which provides outsourced business processing services in multiple industries, acquired Landacorp, which sells disease, case, utilization and resource management software to health insurers. Landacorp’s new name is EXL Landa.

Lexmark International, a vendor of printing services and document workflow products, acquired medical imaging software vendor Acuo Technologies for $45 million. Acuo sells the Universal Clinical Platform, a vendor neutral image archive with image management software. Acuo will become part of document imaging and management software vendor Perceptive Software, which Lexmark bought in 2010. The goal is to offer a single, enterprise platform for additional clinical content to be accessed via electronic health records systems.

Content publisher Hearst Corp. bought Milliman Care Guidelines as it targets serving the accountable care organization market. Hearst already owns clinical decision support vendor Zynx Health and drug reference vendor First Databank. Now, it will medical necessity guidelines used by insurers covering more than 140 million lives, as well as 1,200 hospitals. A new auto-authorization platform enables insurers to focus on complex cases needed manual while speeding routine cases.
