THE FUNDAMENTALS OF EVIDENCE-BASED CARE
Charles Macias, MD, MPH Chief Clinical Systems Integration Officer, TEXAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Houston-based Texas Children’s Hospital, the nation’s largest pediatric facility, is nationally renowned for providing world-class pediatric care as well as care to women through a full continuum of services.

This presentation will explain the multiple factors that led the hospital to implement a clinical and data analytic framework to improve the quality of care delivery and management of patient populations by:

  • Organizing permanent, integrated teams—consisting of clinicians, technologists, analysts and quality personnel, and charged with improving care through rapid cycle process improvement.
  • Integrating critical elements of evidenced base care guidelines into the care delivery workflow.
  • Implementing a measurement system infrastructure to better track, interpret, and disseminate clinical, financial and patient experience outcomes.

All were completed through the creation of organizational structures for data governance, measurement strategies, and data/predictive analytics that have begun to integrate departments and strategies that were formerly silos within Texas Children’s. The result across clinical and administrative operations is improved care, increased productivity and lower costs. In 2013 alone, Texas Children’s estimated it realized $4.5 million of direct benefits as a result of just four of their many EDW project-related successes underway and their streamlined reporting. Texas Children’s also realized tremendous gains as its EDW unlocked meaningful data trapped in its EHR.
