CMS Clarifies Exchange of Lab Data

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has issued guidance to clarify that laboratory results may be transmitted via health information exchanges.

Real-time Claims Adjudication at Work

A small group of Florida internists is having luck with real-time claims adjudication. Nearly half the claims filed by Orlando (Fla.) Internal Medicine are adjudicated in real-time, with the practice receiving near-instantaneous transmissions from its payers about the money it will receive for a given claim and what the level of patient responsibility is.

ICD-10: The '800-pound Gorilla'

"ICD-10 is the 800-pound gorilla in the room," said Lisa Miller, CIO of Xeohealth and co-chair of the WEDI workgroup assigned to the ICD transition. Although the deadline for implementation of the ICD-10 code set is not until Oct. 2013, the industry needs to be gearing up now, Miller urged during a presentation at the HIMSS 2010 Conference in Atlanta.

EDI Vet Gives HIPAA 5010 Update

Many claims clearinghouses expect by the fall of 2010 to be ready for external testing of the new HIPAA 5010 transaction sets, according to Dave Cheli, CIO at Gateway EDI, a St. Louis-based clearinghouse.
