Mr. Patterson is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BancorpSouth, Inc., a $13.5 billion-asset financial holding company. The company operates approximately 315 banking and insurance locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas. Mr. Patterson’s 36 year career with the company includes service as President and Chief Operating Officer from 1983 to 1990 and as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from 1990 to the present. Mr. Patterson is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and holds a Masters Degree from Michigan State University. He has completed the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin and is a member of several professional organizations, including Beta Gamma Sigma and Beta Alpha Psi honoraries.Mr. Patterson is a decorated veteran of the United States Air Force, having received the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Department of Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He has served as President of the Mississippi Bankers Association and as Chairman of the American Bankers Association. He has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of numerous local and regional organizations, including the local Community Development Foundation, North Mississippi Health Services, the Mississippi Economic Council, Mississippi’s Partnership for Economic Development, the University of Mississippi Foundation, CREATE, Inc., among others.Mr. Patterson is a member of the Board and Lead Director of Furniture Brands International, Inc., one of the largest manufacturers and retailers of residential furniture in America. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Mississippi Power Company. In 2004, Mr. Patterson was appointed to an eleven-year term on the Mississippi Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning, the governing board for Mississippi’s eight state universities. He served two terms as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Foundation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and two terms as a Trustee of Columbia Theological Seminary. As Moderator, he also chaired the Presbytery of St. Andrew (PCUSA). He presently serves on the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America and as Board Chairman of the Yocona Area Council, BSA. In 2006, he was honored with the Council’s highest volunteer recognition, the Silver Beaver award.In 1997, Mr. Patterson was honored by election to the Mississippi Business Hall of Fame. In 2001, he was elected to the Alumni Hall of Fame of the University of Mississippi, and in 2005, Mr. Patterson was named Tupelo’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year.
